The eighth form of Maa Durga is MahaGauri. She is bright in color. She is like moon and Conch (शंख). As she wanted Lord Shiva as her husband, she did extreme level of tough Penance (of Lord Shiva) and her skin color got extreme black and she got very weak. Lord Shiva become very happy with her because of hard penance and Washed her body with his hands with Ganga jal. After bath, her body got bright as electric-light (विद्युत प्रभा). That is why, later she known as Maha-Gauri.
MahaGauri has four hands. Two hands show the blessings on Fearlessness (abhay mudra) and Promising posture (Var mudra). One hand possesses Pellet Drum(डमरू) and other hand has Trident (त्रिशूल). Her prayer day is Eigth in Navratra. Out of all her forms, Maha-Gauri form is the most peaceful. She is calm and kind in this form.
Her conveyance is Ox (वृष).
Maa Mahagauri Mantra
श्वेते वृषे समारुढा श्वेताम्बरधरा शुचिः। महागौरी शुभं दघान्महादेवप्रमोददा॥
On the eight day, we do prayer of MahaGauri. Many people finish the Navratra pooja on this auspicious occasion by praying nine girls.
The things which should be used in Liturgy(Pooja):
On this day of Navratra, Cocunut (नारियल) should be offered to Maa and later to Brahmin as well.
If the person does the prayer with pure devotion, devotee could be free from all sort of sadness and will stay in calm & peace. Her famous Place (शक्तिपीठ) in Kankhal near Haridwar.
