Govardhan Pooja is celebrated with immense fervor and enthusiasm in Hindu households, especially the ones who are great followers of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna is also called Govardhan Dhari. The puja is tied to the great legend of Krishna and Mount Govardhan. This festival is also called Annakoot which translates as a mountain of food signifying the importance of Govardhan.

Govardhan puja is celebrated to commemorate the history of Govardhan Parbat through which the lives of many people were saved from the critical rain. It is considered that the people of Gokul were used to worshipping the God Indra, also known as the God of rain. But Lord Krishna had to change such type of opinions of the people of Gokul. He told us that you should all worship the Annakut hill or Govardhan Parbat as he is the real God who is nurturing and saving your lives from drastic conditions by giving you food and shelter.
Hence, they started worshipping that mountain in the place of God Indra. By seeing this, Indra became angry and started raining too much in the Gokul. Finally, Lord Krishna saved their lives by lifting the Govardhan hill at his little finger and covering the people of Gokul under it. In this way, proud Indra was defeated by Lord Krishna. Now, the day is celebrated as Govardhan Puja to offer homage to the Govardhan Parbat. Govardhan puja festival is also celebrated as the Annakut.
The day is also celebrated as Padva or Bali Pratipada in Maharashtra as it is considered that the demon King Bali was defeated and pushed to Patal Loka by the Lord Vishnu in the form of Vamana (incarnation of Lord Vishnu).

गोवर्धन पूजा को हिंदू परिवारों में बड़े हर्ष और उत्साह के साथ मनाया जाता है, विशेषकर उन परिवारों में जो भगवान कृष्ण के
महान अनुयायी होते हैं। भगवान कृष्ण को गोवर्धन धारी भी कहा जाता है। यह पूजा भगवान कृष्ण
और गोवर्धन पर्वत की महान कथा से जुड़ी है। इस त्योहार को अन्नकूट भी कहा जाता है, जिसका अर्थ है भोजन का पहाड़,
जो गोवर्धन के महत्व को दर्शाता है।

गोवर्धन पूजा का महत्व
गोवर्धन पूजा गोवर्धन पर्वत की उस महान कथा को स्मरण करने के लिए मनाई जाती है, जिसके माध्यम से कई लोगों की जान बचाई
गई थी। यह माना जाता है कि गोकुल के लोग इंद्र देवता की पूजा करते थे, जिन्हें वर्षा का देवता भी कहा जाता है।
लेकिन भगवान कृष्ण ने गोकुल के लोगों की ऐसी धारणाओं को बदलने की आवश्यकता समझी|
उन्होंने बताया कि सभी को अन्नकूट पर्वत या गोवर्धन पर्वत की पूजा करनी चाहिए क्योंकि वही असली देवता हैं, जो कठिन परिस्थितियों
में भोजन और आश्रय देकर आपकी जान बचाते हैं।
इंद्र ने यह देखकर गुस्सा हो गया और गोकुल में बहुत अधिक बारिश शुरू कर दी।
अंत में, भगवान कृष्ण ने गोवर्धन पर्वत को अपनी छोटी उंगली पर उठाकर गोकुल के लोगों की जान बचाई। इस प्रकार,
गर्वित इंद्र को भगवान कृष्ण ने हराया। अब, इस दिन को गोवर्धन पूजा के रूप में मनाया जाता है ताकि गोवर्धन पर्वत को श्रद्धांजलि
दी जा सके।
गोवर्धन पूजा का त्योहार अन्नकूट के रूप में भी मनाया जाता है।इस दिन को महाराष्ट्र में पदवा या बलि प्रतिपदा के रूप
में भी मनाया जाता है, क्योंकि यह माना जाता है कि राक्षस राजा बलि को भगवान विष्णु ने वामन (भगवान विष्णु के अवतार)
के रूप में हराकर पाताल लोक भेजा था।
