Nag Panchami, observed during the Shukla Paksha Panchami of the Shravan month, is a traditional Hindu festival where devotees pay homage to serpent deities. This day holds immense significance across India, and people believe that performing puja for snakes brings blessings from the serpent gods.

 

 The Significance of Nag Panchami:

 

1. Worship of Serpent Gods:

   - Nag Panchami is a time to honor the serpent deities who play a vital role in Hindu mythology. These serpents are revered and worshipped as powerful beings.

   - Among the many serpent gods, twelve are particularly worshipped during Nag Panchami:

     - Ananta

     - Vasuki

     - Shesha

     - Padma

     - Kambala

     - Karkotaka

     - Ashvatara

     - Dhritarashtra

     - Shankhapala

     - Kaliya

     - Takshaka

     - Pingala

 

2. The Nag Panchami Puja Mantra:

   - Devotees chant the following mantra to seek blessings from the serpent gods:

    • “सर्वे नागाः प्रीयन्तां मे ये केचित् पृथ्वीतले। ये च हेलिमरीचिस्था येऽन्तरे दिवि संस्थिताः॥ ये नदीषु महानागा ये सरस्वतिगामिनः। ये च वापीतडगेषु तेषु सर्वेषु वै नमः॥”
  • Translation:
    • “May all the snakes residing on Earth, in the sky, in heaven, in sun-rays, in lakes, wells, and ponds bless us. We salute those who dwell within the earth, in the middle regions, and in the heavens. We also pay homage to the great serpents in rivers, those who move in the Sarasvati River, and those in water bodies everywhere.”

3. Nag Chaturthi:

   - Some people observe a fast on Nag Chaturthi, which falls one day before Nag Panchami. In Andhra Pradesh, Nag Chaturthi coincides with the six-day Soora Samharam festival after Diwali.

 

4. Nag Pancham in Gujarat:

   - In Gujarat, Nag Panchami is celebrated 15 days later than in most other states. According to the lunar calendar followed in Gujarat, it falls during Krishna Paksha Panchami of the Shravana month.

   - Nag Panchami is popularly known as Nag Pancham in Gujarat and is observed three days before Krishna Janmashtami festivities.

 

5. Bola Choth:

   - In Gujarat, Bola Choth (also called Bahula Chauth) is celebrated one day before Nag Pancham. On this day, cattle, especially cows, are worshipped
