Do you know why Monday comes after Sunday? Why is this specific sequence of days in specific order only (Sun - रविवार, Mon - सोमवार, Tues - मंगलवार…so on)?
Lets try to know some of the basics first.
Hora (अहोरात्र)
Basically, our sages divided a day (Sunrise to next Sunrise) in 24 parts. Each part is known as Hora. The word Hora derived from the word “Aho-Ratra(अहोरात्र)”, which means Day and night.
The Order of the planets (as mentioned in सुर्य सिद्धान्त)
We have mainly seven planets which apparent to be revolving around us and can bee seen with naked eyes. These are Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. The order of these planets from the earth is as follows:
This order of planets from the earth, is mentioned in the verse (sholka 31 in chapter 12) in Sun’s Principle (सुर्य सिद्धान्त). Please have a look in below pic:
Since we know the basics now, let’s start with actual calculation.
As we know, we have 24 hora in a day. If we assign first Hora (1st) to Sun and then assign next hora to the other planet in the order specified above, Hora number to each planet will be as follows:
Now we are complete with all the 24 Hora for a particular day (i.e. Sunday) and now 25th Hora will be going in the next day. 25th Hora is of Moon as it comes after Mercury as per sequence defined above. Since First Hora of next day belongs to Moon (सोम), the day name will be appointed to Moon and will be named as Monday i.e. सोमवार.
If we follow the same calculation, we will be able to find the name of other days as per the Hora assigned to planets. And can get the sequence in the days (रविवार, सोमवार, मंगलवार etc…).
